This workshop is designed to be accessible for people who have never tried glass fusing. If you already have some experience, you'll be able to create a more intricate design.

I'll introduce you to the process of cutting sheet glass by scoring and breaking. You will also use a selection of frit (crushed glass), stringers (long strands of glass) and enamel paints to decorate the 4 pre-cut panels of glass that will form the sides of your lantern.

I tend to show examples of botanic lanterns, because the botanic designs are what I love personally, but the same techniques can be applied to a wide variety of different designs according to your preference!

Making your project will probably take between 3 and 4 hours of working time, depending on how ambitious and dexterous you are. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided (vegan biscuits and oat milk will be available). We will typically stop for a half hour lunch break partway through the day - please note that lunchtime food is not provided.

After the workshop, your pieces of art will be taken back to my studio for firing. Within about a week, your panels will be installed into the lantern and it will be ready for collection or delivery. I can post your lantern to you for a small extra fee.

The typical group size is 4-5. The maximum group size is 8 and the course will only run if there are at least 3 bookings. It’s fine to book a place on this workshop for well-behaved children aged 9+ as long as they are accompanied by a paying adult.

This workshop will be held at Broome Village Hall, DY9 0HA. This offers a light and airy space, with plenty of room to spread out if needed. There is wheelchair access and the adjacent car park has plenty of space for the size of group. Broome is a beautiful little village near to the Clent Hills, with lots of countryside walks and pubs if you are planning to include the workshop as part of a longer day out.

If you would like to try a larger project, or one with more difficulty, why not look at my Advanced Botanic workshop?

In addition to my scheduled workshops, I am always happy to run workshops for a group of friends. This could be at Broome Village Hall or in your own home. Please get in touch.
